Hey guys, I'm planning to build a deck this summer and I need to buy an air compressor. I'll be using a framing nailer and maybe a finish nailer. I don't want to spend a fortune but I want something reliable. Any recommendations?

For a deck, you'll want at least 4-5 CFM at 90 PSI to run a framing nailer consistently. I'd recommend a 6-gallon pancake compressor, something like the Porter-Cable C2002. It's portable and has enough juice. If you think you'll do more big projects later, maybe step up to a 10-gallon.

Safety first Tim! Make sure whatever you get has an automatic shutoff and check the pressure rating on your nail gun. Also, don't forget to drain the tank after use to prevent rust. I've seen too many guys destroy their compressors by not maintaing them.

I agree with Chris. A pancake is good for portability. But if you're only doing a deck, you could even rent one from Home Depot for the weekend. That way you don't have to store it. But if you think you'll use it for other stuff, buy one. The California Air Tools ones are quiet if noise is an issue.

Thanks guys! I think I'll grab that Porter-Cable. And good tip about draining the tank Steve, I'll set a reminder. Can't wait to get started on the deck!
