Found a killer deal on a 20-gallon air compressor - too good to be true?

Hey folks, just saw this 20-gallon air compressor on sale at Harbor Freight for $149.99 (normally $229). It's the Central Pneumatic model. I need something for occasional tire inflation and maybe running a brad nailer for small projects. At that price, I'm tempted to grab it, but worried it might be junk. Anyone have experience with this brand? Is it worth it or should I save up for something better?

Bob! I've actually owned that exact model for about 2 years now. For the price, it's not bad at all. It's definitely not industrial grade, but for DIY stuff it gets the job done. I use mine for my finish nailer, stapler, and blowing dust out of my workshop. The motor is a bit loud and it takes a while to fill up, but for $150? Can't really complain. Just make sure you drain the tank after each use - these cheaper ones rust out faster if you don't maintain them.

Ugh, Central Pneumatic... I bought one of their compressors back in 2015. Lasted about 18 months before the pressure switch died. Replaced it with a California Air Tools unit and never looked back. If you're just doing light work occasionally, it might be okay, but honestly Bob, I'd check Facebook Marketplace for a used DeWalt or Porter Cable. You can often find better quality for similar money if you're patient. That HF deal is tempting though - just know you're buying disposable gear.

Thanks guys! Will - good to hear it's working for you. Rick - yeah the disposable aspect worries me. I found a used Makita MAC700 on Craigslist for $180 that's 3 years old. Seller says it runs great. Might be worth the extra $30 for something that'll last? I don't mind used if it's quality.

Ooh, the MAC700 is a solid unit! Much quieter than the HF one too. If it's in good shape, that $180 is a WAY better deal long-term. Check if the seller will let you test it - listen for any weird noises when it runs, check for oil leaks if it's an oil-lubed model (I think the MAC700 is), and make sure the pressure gauge works. Bring a tire or something to test the output. If it checks out, I'd go Makita over HF any day, even used!
