Just read this article about Fresno City College's new Advanced Transportation Center. They're claiming to get students 'nearly certified' on day one. Sounds promising, but I'm skeptical. What do you all think? Will this actually help with the tech shortage, or is it just hype?

That sounds awesome, honestly! I wish I had something like that when I was starting out. Learning hands-on from day one is way better than sitting in a classroom for months. But I'm just a DIYer, so maybe I'm missing something. Are they really able to get them certified that fast?

I've been in the trade for 20 years. The shortage is real, but shortcuts aren't the answer. "Nearly certified" doesn't mean they have the experience. I've seen too many newbies that can't read a tape or use a torque wrench properly. It takes time to build that skill. I hope the program includes real-world internships, not just classroom stuff.

I'm with Hank on this. While it's great that they're trying to fill the gap, there's no substitute for on-the-job experience. When I hire, I look for attitude and willingness to learn, not just a piece of paper. But if this center gives them a solid foundation and they can learn fast, maybe it's a step in the right direction. I'd like to see more details on the curriculum.

Good points all around. I guess the key is whether they can balance fast training with quality. Let's see how the first few graduating classes do. Anyone know if they're partnering with local shops for apprenticeships? That would make a big difference.
