Just scored a killer deal on a 60-gallon air compressor - too good to be true?

Hey everyone, been lurking for a while but had to share this find. I was at a local auction and picked up a used Quincy QT-54 60-gallon two-stage compressor for $400! It's about 5 years old but the guy said it was barely used in his home shop. Runs smooth and holds pressure. I've been wanting to upgrade from my little pancake compressor for my garage projects. Is this as good a deal as I think, or am I missing something? Should I be worried about buying used?

Dude, that's insane! Quincy makes solid stuff - their compressors are tanks. For $400?? I paid almost triple that for my similar setup new last year. Even if you have to replace the pump eventually (which you probably won't for years), you're still way ahead. Check the oil, drain any moisture from the tank, and maybe replace the air filter if it looks dirty. Awesome score for DIY projects!

Quincy QT-54 is a workhorse - good find. But auction buys can be tricky. Did you check the tank for rust? Drain valve fully functional? Also, two-stage compressors need proper break-in if it was barely used. Might want to run it for 30 mins with the drain open to circulate oil. At that price, even if you need a $200 motor rebuild down the road, you're still winning. What's your planned use? That thing will run multiple tools no problem.

Professional opinion: inspect that tank thoroughly. Look for pitting or corrosion, especially around the welds and bottom. Quincy tanks are good but 5 years of sitting with moisture can cause issues. Have you checked the ASME tag for manufacturing date? Also, verify the motor specs - sometimes people downgrade motors on resales. For $400 it's worth the risk if everything checks out. I've run Quincy compressors on job sites for 10+ years with minimal maintenance.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I drained the tank - a little rusty water came out but nothing crazy. Motor is original 5HP according to the plate. BuildItBob - mostly for automotive work (impact wrench, sandblasting cabinet) and some woodworking tools. SparkySam - I'll look up how to check the ASME tag. The auction was from an estate sale so I think the 'barely used' story checks out. Feeling pretty good about this!
