My air compressor won't start - just clicks!

Hey all, my 30 gallon Craftsman compressor has been working fine for years, but today when I turn it on, I hear a single click and then nothing. The tank has pressure (around 60 psi) but the motor doesn't kick in. I've checked the switch and it's fine. Any ideas? Thanks!

Sounds like a classic bad start capacitor or a stuck check valve. First, unplug it and bleed all the air out. Then remove the cover over the motor and inspect the capacitor for bulging or leaks. If it looks okay, check the check valve (usually near the tank) - it might be stuck closed, keeping the motor from starting because of back pressure. A quick tap with a wrench might free it, but you may need to replace it.

I had a similar issue with mine. Turned out the pressure switch was bad. It would click but wouldn't send power to the motor. You can test it with a multimeter - if you're not getting continuity when the switch is in auto, that's your problem. Replacement is cheap (around $20) and easy to install. Might be worth checking before you dive into the capacitor.

I hate to be the budget guy, but before you buy any parts, check the thermal overload switch. Sometimes it trips and needs a reset. It's usually a little red button on the motor. If it popped, it'll be sticking out - just press it in and try again. Saved me a trip to the store.

Wow, thanks for all the fast replies! I'll start with the overload button and then move to the capacitor. I'm not too handy with a multimeter but I'll try. I'll let you know what I find.
