Hey all! I'm building a deck in the backyard and thinking about getting a cordless impact wrench for lag screws and bolts. I'm a weekend warrior, so not professional use, but I want something that can handle 4"-6" lag screws without struggling. Budget around $200-300 for the tool and battery. Any recs?

Wendy, for that price range you can get a solid mid-tier impact. I'd look at Milwaukee M18 Fuel or Dewalt XR. Both have tons of torque. But honestly, for a weekend deck build, even a Ryobi or Craftsman brushless would do the job. Save your money for a good circular saw too.

I'm on a tight budget myself. Just built a shed with a $99 Ryobi 1/2" impact wrench from Home Depot. It zipped 5" lag screws into pressure treated pine no problem. Batteries are cheap too. Don't overspend if you're not using it daily.

Thanks both! Paul, I was leaning toward Milwaukee but the price stings. Carl, does the Ryobi last? I've heard mixed things about the batteries.

Wendy, the Milwaukee is an investment but if you ever get into more tools, the battery system is great. But Carl's right--for one deck, Ryobi will get it done. Just buy a couple of batteries and you're fine. I've used Ryobi for side jobs and they hold up ok. Not as refined, but they work.
