Alright folks, I'm planning to build a 12x16 deck this spring. I have a basic cordless drill (Ryobi 18V) but wondering if I really need an impact driver for the deck screws. I've heard they make a huge difference. Should I buy one? Looking at maybe DeWalt or Milwaukee. Thoughts?

Absolutely get an impact driver. Your wrist will thank you. For decking, you'll be driving a ton of 3-inch screws. A regular drill can do it but it'll take forever and the clutch might even burn out. I use a DeWalt 20V max XR impact and it's been bulletproof for 3 years. Don't cheap out on a cheapo brand – you'll regret it.

Yeah what Carl said. Impact drivers are way faster and less strain. Plus they don’t strip screws as easy. If you can swing it, get a kit with a drill and impact. Milwaukee Fuel is awesome but pricey. Ryobi makes a decent one too if you’re on a budget. I’ve used mine for a shed and it held up fine.

I’ll second the impact driver. One tip: make sure to use hex shank bits so they don’t slip. Also, if you’re doing a lot of holes for ledgers or joist hangers, you might want a drill/driver combo. But for screws, impact all the way. I’ve got the Milwaukee M12 and it’s surprisingly strong for a compact.
