Building a deck - what's the best impact driver?

Hey folks, I'm planning to build a 12x16 deck in my backyard next month. I've got a decent circular saw and drill, but I think I need a good impact driver for screwing down all those deck boards. I've seen some deals on the DeWalt and Milwaukee sets. What do you all recommend? Also, any tips for a first-time deck builder?

Hey Dan, welcome to the forum! Before you buy anything, make sure you check your local building codes. You'll need permits and possibly inspections. Also, don't forget about safety - wear eye and ear protection, and if you're using a nail gun, be careful. As for impact drivers, I've used both. The Milwaukee M18 Fuel is a beast, but the DeWalt atomic is lighter and easier on the wrist for long days. Either will do the job. Just get one with a brushless motor.

I'm just a weekend warrior, but I built my shed with the DeWalt 887 impact driver and it was fine. I got it on sale with a battery and charger for like $150. It's got enough torque for deck screws, but you'll want a separate drill for pilot holes. Also, use star-drive screws - they don't strip as easily as Philips. Don't forget to stagger your seams on the decking.

I'm all about Milwaukee, sorry Larry and Felix (no offense to DeWalt). The M18 Surge is my go-to - it's hydraulic, so it's quieter and has less vibration. I've built three decks with it and it's never let me down. Plus, the battery ecosystem is awesome if you get into other tools later. But honestly, you can't go wrong with either. Just get a 5Ah battery for all-day use.

Thanks everyone! Seems like I can't really go wrong. I'll probably go with the DeWalt since I've got a couple of batteries already. I'll make sure to get star-drive screws. Any other tips for a beginner? Like, what about joist hangers and flashing?
