Hey everyone! I'm planning to build a deck in my backyard this spring. I've got some basic tools, but I'm looking to invest in some quality stuff. What are the must-have tools for deck building? I've seen some people use nail guns, but I'm not sure if I should get one or just stick with a hammer. Any advice appreciated!

Welcome to the forum! For a deck, I'd definitely recommend a good cordless drill/driver and a circular saw. But the real game-changer is a nail gun – specifically a framing nailer. It'll save you hours and your arm won't feel like it's falling off. I've used the DeWalt and Hitachi, both are solid. Also, don't forget a level and a square – you don't want a wonky deck!

I second what Carl says. If you're just doing a one-time project, renting a framing nailer might be a better option than buying. But if you plan on doing more projects, it's worth the investment. Also, consider a good impact driver – it's essential for driving screws into pressure-treated lumber. And get a quality tape measure – trust me, a flimsy one will drive you crazy.

Another tip: get a power saw with a good blade. A circular saw is fine, but a miter saw is great for precise cuts on railing and trim. If you're on a budget, you can get a decent one from Harbor Freight. And don't forget safety gear – gloves, safety glasses, and ear protection. I've seen too many accidents from people rushing.

Honestly, you can do it all with a hammer and a handsaw if you want, but it'll take forever. If you're buying, stick with a reputable brand like Makita or Milwaukee. I've used the same impact driver for 10 years and it's still going strong. Also, get a nail gun that uses nails in coils – they're easier to handle up high. Good luck with the deck!
