Hey all, I'm about to start building a 12x16 deck in my backyard. I've got a basic circular saw and a drill, but I feel like I might need more specialized tools for the job. What would you recommend for a first-timer? I'm on a budget but want decent quality.

For a deck, you definitely want a good miter saw for the rails and balusters. I got a 10-inch sliding compound miter saw on sale last year, and it's a game changer. Also, if you're setting posts, a post hole digger (manual is fine) and a level are essential. Don't forget a nail gun if you can swing it - saves tons of time.

I'd add a good quality tape measure and a chalk line for layout. For cutting the deck boards, any decent circular saw works, but a track saw or a straight edge guide helps for long rips. And don't cheap out on safety glasses - you only get one set of eyes.

If you're using composite decking, you'll need a special blade to avoid melting. But for treated lumber, a standard blade is fine. Also, consider renting an impact driver if you don't have one - it drives screws much faster than a drill. I got mine for $30 at Harbor Freight and it's still going strong.

I've built a few decks and I always stick with Bosch or DeWalt for power tools. My miter saw is Bosch and it's been rock solid for 10 years. But if you're on a budget, Ryobi makes decent stuff for the price. Just make sure to get a good spreader bar for leveling joists - that thing saves you lots of headaches.
