Alright folks, I'm in the market for a new impact driver. I've been using my old brushed DeWalt for years and it's finally giving up. I'm torn between the new DeWalt XR and the Makita XDT16. I do a lot of cabinet installs and some light framing on the side. Any advice? I know both are top tier but I want to hear from people who've actually used them side by side.

I've used both extensively. The Makita is lighter and more compact, which is great for overhead work and tight spots. The auto-stop feature is a lifesaver when you're driving screws close to the edge. I've had mine for 2 years, dropped it off a ladder, still runs like new. DeWalt's got more power on paper, but honestly, I've never felt underpowered with the Makita.

I'm a DeWalt guy through and through, but I've got to admit, the Makita XDT16 is a beast. That's what my buddy uses and I've borrowed it. The speed adjustment is super intuitive. But the DeWalt has that nice LED layout and the chuck seems to hold bits tighter for me. I'd say go to a store and feel both in your hand. Ergonomics matter more than the specs sometimes.

Thanks guys. I've held both, and the Makita does feel a bit nicer in my mitt. The auto-stop on the Makita really has me leaning that way. But I've got a truckload of DeWalt batteries from other tools. Any thoughts on battery compatibility? I hate to switch ecosystems.

That's the classic dilemma! I was all Makita before, but switched to DeWalt for a while just because of battery deals. But honestly, if you're already deep in DeWalt, maybe stick with that. You can get the bare tool for a good price and use your existing batteries. The new DeWALT XR is no slouch. But if you're willing to start fresh, the Makita's worth it. You can always sell your old stuff on eBay.
