Hey folks, looking to upgrade my impact wrench for working on my truck. Currently have a basic corded one but want to go cordless. Narrowed it down to DeWalt's DCF894B 1/2" or Makita's XWT14Z. Both seem similar on paper - around 700 ft-lbs torque, brushless motors. Anyone have real-world experience with these? I'm mostly doing brake jobs, tire rotations, and occasional suspension work on my F-150. Budget is around $300 for bare tool.

As a collector, I own both actually! The Makita XWT14Z has better balance in hand - it's about 0.3 lbs lighter and the grip contour is superior. DeWalt's DCF894B has slightly faster RPM (2200 vs 2100) but in practice, both zip off lug nuts equally fast. Where Makita shines is their 18V LXT battery ecosystem - if you already have Makita tools, stick with them. DeWalt's advantage is their 3-speed selector is more intuitive. Personally, I reach for the Makita more often.

Weekend warrior here - I've had the DeWalt for 2 years now. Used it to rebuild the front end on my '98 Silverado. Thing's a beast! Only complaint is the battery indicator is kinda small/hard to read when you're under the truck. My buddy has the Makita and it's nice too, but his trigger got sticky after a year of heavy use. Both will get the job done honestly. Pro tip: whichever you choose, get the hog ring anvil, not the pin detent - way faster socket changes!

Garage gearhead checking in. For automotive work, consider the reverse speed too! Makita's 3,800 RPM in reverse vs DeWalt's 3,400 RPM might not sound like much, but when you're trying to quickly remove a stubborn bolt, that extra zip helps. Also check local deals - Home Depot often has DeWalt promotions with free batteries, while Acme Tools runs Makita bundles. Both brands have good warranty support. PS: neither like being dropped in oil pans (learned that the hard way lol).
