Hey all, I'm in the market for a new 1/2" impact wrench. I do a lot of automotive work – suspension, brakes, the works. I've narrowed it down to the DeWalt DCF899 or the Makita XWT08. Anyone have experience with both? I need something that can bust loose rusty bolts without breaking a sweat. Also, battery life matters since I'm on the road a lot.

I've used both on some classic car restos. The Makita has a bit more torque on paper, and in practice it seems to handle seized bolts better. But the DeWalt is lighter and balances nicer. If you're doing overhead work, DeWalt all the way. For grunt, Makita. Also Makita's batteries seem to last longer between charges.

I'm just a weekend guy but I've got the DeWalt DCF899. It's never let me down, even on rusty truck suspension bolts. One thing though – make sure you get the hog ring anvil, not the detent pin. The detent pin can be a pain swapping sockets. Also DeWalt's warranty is solid. I had a battery die and they replaced it no questions asked.

Thanks for the input! So it sounds like both are good, but Makita might edge ahead for raw power. How about the ergonomics? I'll be using it all day, so comfort matters.

Ergonomics wise, DeWalt takes the cake. The Makita is a bit bulkier and heavier. If you're using it vertical on a car, you won't notice much. But if you're reaching into tight engine bays or doing overhead work, the DeWalt is easier on the wrists. I'd say try holding both at the store if you can. Also the Makita tends to vibrate more, so your hands might get tired faster.
