Alright folks, I'm in the market for a new cordless drill and I'm torn between DeWalt and Makita. I've been using a crappy no-name for years and I'm ready to upgrade. I need something with serious torque for driving lag bolts and mixing drywall mud occasionally. I've heard good things about both, but I want real-world feedback. What's your pick and why?

Been in the trades for 25+ years, I've owned both. DeWalt's are tanks, but they're heavy. Makita's have better balance and the batteries last longer IMO. For mixing mud, you want the brushless models from either. My current daily is a Makita XFD13, handles everything I throw at it, and the 5Ah batteries are beasts. DeWalt's fine too, but if you're gonna use it all day, Makita's ergonomics win.

I'm just an apprentice, but I grew up on DeWalt. My old man's a carpenter and he's got a whole set. I bought my own 20V kit and I've dropped it off a ladder twice and it still works like a champ. The chuck is solid and the torque is mad. I can't speak for Makita, but DeWalt's never let me down. Plus, the yellow and black looks cool lol

I'm a collector, so I have way too many tools. I've got both, and honestly, you can't go wrong. But for pure power-to-weight, Makita's subcompact line is a hidden gem. I use the XFD12 for most things, it's tiny but has crazy punch. DeWalt's new XR series is also excellent, but they're a bit bulkier. If you're mixing mud, the Makita again, because the trigger response is smoother. My two cents.
