Just saw this article about Fresno City College’s new program that gets students nearly certified on day one. They claim it’s tackling the tech shortage. What do you guys think? Is this the future or just hype?

Interesting approach, but I’m skeptical. Our shop has turned away fresh grads because they lack real-world diagnostic skills. Book learning is one thing, but you can’t beat hands-on. That said, if they’re getting hands-on training from day one, it might work. I’d need to see more about the curriculum.

As a tool collector, I’m curious what tools they’re using. I bet the program invests in high-quality diagnostic gear and scanners. The shortage is real – I’ve seen shops close because they can’t find anyone. Anything that gets competent techs into the field faster is a win in my book.

Back in my day you worked your way up from sweeping floors. This ‘near certification’ thing sounds like they’re cheapening the trade. But hey, times change. If the kids know how to use a multimeter and a scan tool properly, more power to ’em. Just hope they teach the basics too, like how to turn a wrench without stripping bolts.

Precision is everything in auto work. If they’re getting certified quick, I hope they’re still covering the fine details like torque specs and measurement techniques. One loose bolt can cause a catastrophe. I’d rather a slower but thorough program than a rushed one. But I’m all for solving the shortage – just do it right.
