Hey guys, having a weird issue with my 1/2" cordless impact wrench. It's about 2 years old, been great until now. When I pull the trigger it makes this grinding/rattling noise and the battery dies super fast even after a full charge. Tried two different batteries, same problem. Anyone run into this before? Using it for lug nuts and suspension work on my truck.

Pete! Sounds like the hammer/anvil mechanism might be worn out. I've got 14 different impacts in my collection and I've seen this a few times. What brand/model is it? The noise plus battery drain suggests internal resistance from failing components. Could be brushes if it's brushed motor, or planetary gears going bad. Have you taken it apart to look?

Not an auto guy but my woodworking tools do similar things when bearings go. That grinding noise is never good. Have you dropped it recently? My orbital sander made noises like that after it fell off the bench last month. Ended up being cheaper to buy new than fix, but auto tools might be different. Maybe try blowing it out with compressed air first?

Professional mechanic here - see this all the time. Stop using it immediately before you cause more damage. The noise is likely stripped gears or a broken hammer, and it's dragging the motor, hence the battery drain. What brand? If it's Milwaukee/Makita/Dewalt, parts are available. If it's a cheaper brand, might not be worth repairing. Check if it's still under warranty first. Also - are you using the right charger for those batteries? Wrong charger can cause issues too.

Thanks everyone! It's a DeWalt DCF887B. Haven't dropped it that I remember, but it's seen some use. Mike778 - using the standard DeWalt charger that came with it. Carl - haven't opened it up yet, kinda nervous about voiding warranty if there's any left. Sounds like I should contact DeWalt first? The noise is definitely coming from the front end where the anvil is.
