Hey guys, just got my first car and want to keep it clean without breaking the bank. Looking at cordless car vacuums - DeWalt DCV517B and Makita XCV11Z seem similar on paper. Anyone have experience with both? I'm leaning DeWalt since I already have their 20V batteries from my drill, but Makita's got that brushless motor... Thoughts?

Tim, I've run both through their paces in my garage. The DeWalt has better suction IMO - pulls up embedded sand from floor mats like a champ. But the Makita's lighter and the hose is more flexible for getting under seats. If you're already in the DeWalt battery ecosystem, stick with it. The runtime on a 5Ah battery is solid for 2-3 car details.

Back in my day we used shop-vacs with extension cords, but these cordless ones are handy. My son has the Makita - the filter system is easier to clean than DeWalt's. Less time shaking out dust means more time actually cleaning. Both will get the job done, but consider maintenance too.

Safety note: Check the amp ratings on those batteries before running vacuums continuously. Overheating can be an issue with some aftermarket batteries. Also, both models have decent dust filtration, but wear a mask if you're dealing with fine particulates. Personally prefer Makita's ergonomic handle - reduces wrist strain during longer sessions.
