Hey everyone, I'm about to start building a new deck and I know my car is gonna get covered in sawdust and screws. I need a good vacuum that can handle car detailing but also be useful for small DIY cleanup. Any suggestions? I'm on a budget, so nothing too pricey. Thanks!

First off, safety inspector here: make sure whatever vac you get has a HEPA filter if you're dealing with fine sawdust. You don't want that stuff in your lungs. For car detailing, I'd recommend a shop vac with a crevice tool and a brush attachment. Rigid makes a good 4-5 gallon one that won't break the bank. Just don't use it on wet messes unless it's rated for that.

I've used a lot of vacs over the years. For cars, you want something with strong suction and a long hose. The small handhelds are okay for quick cleanups, but they run out of juice fast. I got a DeWalt 20V handheld that's great for tight spots, but for a full detail, you need a canister. Check out the Vacmaster or Armor All 2.5 gallon. They're cheap and get the job done. Also, get a microfiber towel for the dash.

I second the shop vac idea. I've got a 6-gallon Craftsman that I use for everything from cars to garage cleanup. Get a detail kit with small nozzles. Pro tip: put a nylon stocking over the filter to catch fine dust and make cleaning easier. Also, if you're doing a deck, consider a dust separator for your shop vac – saves you from constantly cleaning the filter. For car vacuums specifically, I've heard good things about the Bissell AutoCare, but it's a bit more expensive. If you're on a budget, Harbor Freight has a Portland brand that's decent.

Thanks for the tips! I'll look into the Rigid and the Vacmaster. The nylon stocking trick sounds genius. I'll probably go with a shop vac since I can use it for both the deck and the car. Appreciate the help!
