Hey all, I’m new to chainsaws and was wondering – do y’all always wear chaps? I see a lot of vids with guys in shorts and no chaps. Is it really that necessary for small jobs? Trying to save some cash but don’t wanna be dumb.

100% yes. I learned the hard way – got a kickback once and the chain barely touched my leg. Still melted through my jeans in a split second. Chaps are cheap insurance. I keep a pair in every saw case. Don’t skimp.

PREACH! I see too many newbies think 'it won't happen to me.' I work in the field daily and ALWAYS wear chaps, helmet, and gloves. Spend the $80-100 on good chaps, not the cheap thin ones. They will save your leg, Larry.

Alright, you guys convinced me. I saw some at Harbor Freight for $30 – worth it or junk?

HF chaps are okay for light use but the fibers aren't as dense. If you cut often, get Stihl or Husqvarna. I've heard stories of HF ones tearing. You get what you pay for.

Agreed. HF chaps might do in a pinch, but your legs are worth more than $30. Check FB marketplace for used ones if budget is tight.
