Best chainsaw for building a deck?

Hey everyone, I'm planning to build a 12x16 deck in my backyard this spring. I need to cut some pressure-treated lumber and maybe some cedar for the railing. I've never owned a chainsaw before, but I think I need one for this project. What should I look for? Electric or gas? Any specific brands you recommend? I don't want to break the bank, but I want something reliable.

If you're serious about this, go with a gas chainsaw. Stihl is the only way to go. I've used them for years, and nothing else holds up like they do. For a deck project, a 16-18 inch bar is perfect. Check out the Stihl MS 271. It's a bit pricey, but it'll last you a lifetime if you take care of it. Trust me, you won't regret it.

I get that Stihl is great, but honestly for a one-time project like that, an electric chainsaw might be all you need. I got a DeWalt 20V MAX for around my house, and it's plenty for cutting lumber. Plus no gas, no oil, no fuss. If you don't have a big battery system, maybe look at a corded one. They're cheap and powerful. But if you think you'll need it for other stuff, then maybe gas.

I've been cutting for 40+ years, and I've seen it all. For a deck project, you're going to be making a few rips and crosscuts, not felling trees. I'd say a mid-range gas saw is overkill, but electric is fine if you have a long cord or a good battery. But you might also consider a circular saw with a good blade - it'll make straight cuts easier and safer. Just saying. But if you want a chainsaw, a small gas like the Husqvarna 120 or even a corded electric from Oregon will do the job. Watch your safety!

Thanks guys! I think I'll look into a corded electric since I have a big yard and outlets are nearby. Safety first, right? And maybe I'll borrow a circular saw from my dad. Thanks for the tips!
