Hey folks, I'm planning to build a 20x12 deck next month. I need to cut a lot of 2x6s and 4x4 posts. I've got a cheap electric saw but it's slow and bogs down. Should I upgrade to a gas saw or stick with corded? What size bar do I need?

For a deck build, you don't need a huge saw. A 16” bar is plenty for dimensional lumber. I'd recommend a Stihl MS251 or Husqvarna 450 Rancher. Both have plenty of torque and won't die on you. If you're near power, a corded electric like a Makita UC4051 would work fine too, just watch the cord. What's your budget?

I agree with Steve. I built my shed with a little 14” electric and it was okay but slower. Switched to a gas 18” and it was night and day. Just remember to keep the chain sharp and use proper PPE. Also, make sure you're not cutting above ankle height on the ground - use a sawhorse. Safety first!

Thanks guys! My budget is around $400. I'll look into the Stihl. Sparky, good point about the sawhorse. I got a pair of metal ones from Harbor Freight. Any tips on chain sharpening? I've always just swapped chains.

Sharpening is easy with a file guide. I use a Pferd 2-in-1 sharpener. Watch a couple YouTube vids, it takes 5 mins per chain. Way cheaper than buying new chains. Also, for your deck, consider a ripping chain if you're cutting a lot of framing lumber - it cuts faster with the grain. Good luck!
