Hey folks, I’m planning to build a deck in my backyard this spring, roughly 20x12ft. I need a chainsaw to cut pressure-treated lumber and maybe some hardwood for railings. I’m comfortable with a saw but not a pro. Budget is around $300-400. Any recommendations? Gas or electric? Leaning towards gas for power but open to electric.

For a deck build, I’d go with a mid-range gas saw like the Husqvarna 440 or Stihl MS 251. They got the grunt for long cuts and are reliable. But if you’re not cutting all day, a good electric like the Makita XCU04PT1 with batteries could save you money and maintenance. Just be careful with extension cords or battery life!

Important safety tip: whatever you get, make sure it has a chain brake and wear chaps! I've seen too many accidents with kickback. For a deck, you want a saw with a 16-18 inch bar, enough for most cuts. Also, check the anti-vibration system—your hands will thank you. I'd say the Stihl MS 250 is a solid choice too.

If you're going gas, the Husqvarna 450 is a beast for the price. I used one to build my shed last year, ripped through 4x4s like butter. Just remember to mix the gas right and keep the chain sharp. For electric, I've heard good things about the DeWalt DCCS670X1—brushless motor, good runtime. But gas gives you that freedom of movement.

Thanks everyone! I think I’ll go with the Husqvarna 440, seems like a good balance. I’ll definitely grab chaps and practice safe cutting. Appreciate the tips!
