Hey everyone, I'm planning to build a 12x16 deck in my backyard. I need to cut some 4x4 posts and maybe some 2x6s. I'm looking for a chainsaw that won't break the bank but can handle the job. Any recommendations?

For deck building, you really don't need a huge saw. A 14-16 inch bar with a decent engine will do. I'd recommend a Stihl MS 251 or Husqvarna 450. They're reliable and have enough power for crosscuts. If you're only using it occasionally, a corded electric might even work, but gas gives you more freedom.

Stihl all the way! I've used the MS 251 for years, never let me down. Parts are easy to find and it starts up every time. Don't get a cheap off-brand, you'll regret it. Spending a bit more now saves headaches later.

I'm on a tight budget, so I got a Ryobi 14-inch gas saw from Home Depot. Paid like $150. It's not pro-grade but for cutting deck boards and posts it works fine. Just make sure to use good mix oil. Saved enough to buy extra lumber!

I'm just learning, so I went with a corded electric Black+Decker. Super light, no mixing gas, and cheap. If you have an outlet nearby, it's perfect for occasional cuts. Just watch the cord!
