Hey everyone, planning to build a 12x16 deck in the backyard. I've got a circular saw but it's not cutting it (pun intended). Looking for a reliable chainsaw to handle the joists and maybe some cedar posts. Any suggestions? I'm on a budget but don't want junk.

Bob, for deck work, you don't need a huge chainsaw. A decent 16-inch bar is plenty. I'd go with a Stihl MS 170 or an Echo CS-310. They're light, reliable, and won't break the bank. Just make sure to get a sharp chain and some bar oil. I've used mine for years on similar projects.

I'll second the Stihl, but if you want cordless, the DeWalt 20V MAX with a 12-inch bar is sweet for this kind of stuff. No gas fumes, easy to handle, and battery life is decent. But for heavy duty cutting, gas is the way. Also, don't forget to check if you need any permits for the deck!

Thanks guys! I was leaning towards a gas one, but the cordless option sounds easier. How's the power for cutting 2x6s? And Dan, good point about permits - I'll check that out. Also, any tips on chainsaw safety for a newbie?

Safety first, Bob! Watch some YouTube tutorials on proper handling, always use two hands, and wear chaps and a helmet. And don't cut above shoulder height. For cutting 2x6s, a 12-inch electric is fine, but you'll burn through batteries. I'd get an extra battery if you go cordless.
