Hey all, I've got a problem with my cordless chainsaw. It's a 40V unit, not even a year old. The battery won't charge past one bar, and the charger light just blinks red. I've tried cleaning the contacts, but no luck. Anyone had this issue? Is the battery toast or is there something else I can try?

I've seen this happen with 40V batts, especially if they've been left in the cold or dropped. Does the battery get hot when you try to charge it? If it's hot, it might be a thermal cutout. Also, check the charger - is it the original? Some aftermarket chargers are finicky.

I had a similar issue with a 18V lithium once. Turned out one of the cells in the pack was dead. The charger senses the voltage and won't charge a bad cell. You might need to buy a new battery, but first try to fully discharge it and then charge it again - sometimes they need a reset.

Back in my day, we didn't have these fancy batteries. But from what I hear, lithium batteries have a limited number of charge cycles. If you've been using it heavily, it might just be at the end of its life. Also, check if there's a warranty - some brands cover battery defects for a couple years.

Thanks for the tips! I'll try the discharge trick and check the temp. The battery doesn't feel hot, but I'll let it cool down completely. If not, I'll look into the warranty. Appreciate the help!
