Hey all, new deck build next month. I need to cut pressure-treated 2x6s and 2x8s, and also some 4x4 posts. I've been eyeing the Husqvarna 450 Rancher but also saw a decent deal on a Stihl MS 271. What's the move for a homeowner who'll mostly do crosscuts and some rip cuts? Any love for battery-powered options?

For a deck build, both the 450 and the MS 271 are solid. I'd lean towards the Husky because it's a bit lighter and has a 20" bar which is more than enough for 2x8s. But honestly, if you're just crosscutting dimensional lumber, you might even get away with a good circular saw. Chainsaws are a pain for ripping. If you insist on a chainsaw, get one with a low kickback bar and chain, and consider a ripping chain if you're doing lots of long rips. Battery options are fine for small stuff, but for a whole deck, you'll be swapping batteries a lot. Stick with gas for this project.

I second what Steve said. I've built a couple decks with just a circular saw and a speed square. But if you're set on a chainsaw, the Stihl MS 271 is a beast. It's got good torque. Just remember to keep the chain sharp. Dull chain on PT lumber is a recipe for frustration. Also, buy a couple of extra chains and a file. You'll thank yourself later.

I see a lot of guys using cheap electric chainsaws for deck work, but they tend to bog down on long rips. I'd go with a mid-size gas saw, maybe a 50cc. The Husky 450 is a good choice. I've had one for years and it's never failed me. Just keep the air filter clean and sharpen the chain regularly. Oh, and wear chaps. Kickback on PT lumber is no joke.
