Hey y'all, I'm about to build a 20x12 deck in my backyard. I need to cut some 6x6 posts to length and notch them for the beams. My old 14" electric saw is dying. Should I get a gas or battery powered chainsaw? Looking for something reliable and not too expensive. Any suggestions?

For deck building, you don't need a huge saw. A 16" bar on a gas saw is fine, but if you're already invested in a battery system, a 12-14" battery saw is plenty for 6x6s. I'd stick with your brand's 60V or equivalent. FWIW, I've got a Milwaukee M18 16" and it's a beast. Cuts all day on a couple batteries.

Honestly, for that kind of work, a corded electric is underrated - no battery anxiety, just plug and go. But if you're in the middle of a yard with no outlet, battery is the way. A decent gas saw is overkill unless you're felling trees. For notching, you're going to be more precise with a smaller bar, so 14-16" is good. And make sure you get sharp chains!
