Hey folks, looking at getting a new chainsaw for some light yard work and occasional firewood cutting. I've used both DeWalt and Makita cordless tools on job sites before retiring, but never their chainsaws. Anyone have experience with either brand's 16-18" models? Leaning toward battery-powered for convenience. Price isn't the main factor - I want something that'll last and not leave me frustrated mid-cut. Thanks!

Tim - I've got the Makita 36V X2 (two 18V batteries) 16" model. Bought it last fall to clear some fallen limbs after a storm. Honestly, it's been great for my needs. Cuts through 10-12" oak no problem on a full charge. The anti-vibration is decent, though my arms still feel it after an hour. My buddy has a DeWalt 60V and swears by it, but I'm already invested in Makita batteries. If you're starting fresh, maybe compare battery ecosystems?

At the shop where I apprentice, we use DeWalt 20V Max chainsaws for cleanup work. They're reliable and the quick chain tensioning is a lifesaver when you're in a hurry. Boss says they've had fewer returns compared to some other brands. But Makita's brushless motors are supposed to be more efficient? I'd check torque specs - for bigger stuff, you might want the higher voltage options. Both good tho!

lol i burned up a cheapo chainsaw last year trying to cut up an old maple. Learned my lesson! Got the DeWalt 60V 18" and it's a beast. Cuts like butter, battery lasts longer than my attention span. Only complaint is it's a bit heavy when you're holding it overhead. Makita might be lighter? But for weekend warriors like me, either brand is probably overkill tbh. Just don't buy the big box store junk!
