Found a killer deal on a chainsaw - too good to be true?

Hey everyone, just saw this on Craigslist - a Stihl MS 250 for $150, looks barely used. Seller says it runs great and only used it for a few small projects. I've been wanting to upgrade from my old electric saw for some bigger yard work. Should I jump on this? Seems like a steal compared to new prices!

Larry, be careful with those deals. In my 40 years as a carpenter, I've seen plenty of 'barely used' tools that were actually abused. Ask for the serial number and check if it's stolen first. Stihl makes good saws, but at that price I'd want to hear it run myself. Bring some fresh mix gas and test it on a log if you can.

Chris is right - always test before buying. That said, $150 for an MS250 is solid if it's legit. I run Stihl on all my job sites. Check the bar for straightness and look for scoring on the piston through the exhaust port. If the seller won't let you inspect properly, walk away. Too many flood-damaged tools out there these days.

As an HVAC guy who cuts a lot of framing lumber, I'd say go for it but be smart. Ask when it was last serviced - chain sharpened, air filter cleaned, etc. Also check the chain brake actually works! Almost lost a finger once on a 'deal' saw where the safety was busted. Bring a friend if meeting somewhere sketchy.

Thanks guys! Really appreciate the advice. Going to message the seller and ask to test it tomorrow morning. I'll check all the things you mentioned - serial number, run it with my own gas, test the brake, and look for scoring. Will update if I end up getting it! Fingers crossed it's not too good to be true.
