Hey all, just saw this on Craigslist - a Stihl MS 250 for $150, looks clean in the pics. Seller says it runs great, only used for light yard work. I'm tempted but worried it might have hidden issues. Anyone have experience with these? Is this a steal or a headache waiting to happen?

Dave, I've run Stihls for 40 years. The MS 250 is a solid homeowner saw if it's genuine. At that price, I'd be suspicious. Check the compression - should be around 120 psi. Ask if it's ever been dropped or if the bar's been straightened. Also, see if they have the manual and receipts. If it starts cold on the third pull, might be okay. But bring a piece of wood to test it!

Dave, I'd pass unless you can verify it's not stolen. I see too many 'great deals' that vanish after the sale. If you do go, meet in a public spot and check the serial number. For DIY, a new electric might be safer if you're not cutting big stuff. But if it's legit, Tim's advice is gold - test it thoroughly!
