Found a killer deal on a Stihl MS 250 - too good to be true?

Hey folks, just spotted a Stihl MS 250 on Craigslist for $200, seller says it's lightly used and runs perfect. Normally retails for $350+ new. I'm tempted to jump on it for some light property cleanup, but I'm always wary of used power tools. Anyone have experience with this model or buying used chainsaws? Is this a steal or a potential headache?

Hold up, Carl. Before you even think about handing over cash, ask for the serial number and check if it's stolen. Also, used chainsaws can be dangerous if not maintained. Ask the seller when the chain was last sharpened, bar oiled, and if the chain brake works. If they can't answer, walk away. Safety first, always.

Nice find! I've got an MS 250 I use for milling small logs into slabs for my woodworking projects. It's a solid mid-range saw—enough power for most DIY stuff but not too heavy. At $200, that's a great price if it's in good shape. I'd ask to test it cold-start (a good saw should fire up in a few pulls). Maybe bring a piece of scrap wood to see how it cuts. If it runs smooth, go for it!

Thanks for the tips! Paul, good call on the cold-start test—I'll definitely do that. DrillMaster, I'll ask for maintenance details and check the serial. Seller claims it's from an estate sale, so hopefully legit. If the chain brake is functional and it cuts straight, I might pull the trigger. Will update if I get it!

Also, wear your PPE when testing—gloves, eye pro, and chaps if you have them. Even a 'lightly used' saw can kick back if the chain's dull or tension's off. Better safe than sorry. Let us know how it goes.
