Hey guys, I just got a new chainsaw and I'm putting together my PPE. Right now I have safety glasses, work gloves, and steel-toed boots. Do I really need to drop $50 on a chaps? Seems like a lot for something I might not use.

Pete, don't skimp on chaps! I've seen what happens when a chain kicks back and hits a leg. My buddy Joe had his jeans shredded in seconds. Chaps are cheap compared to a hospital bill. Get the full wrap ones.

Listen to Hank. I've been cutting for 40 years, and I've had two kickbacks that would have put me in the ER without chaps. Also, get a helmet with a face screen and ear muffs. Your hearing is worth more than $50.

I'll add that the type of chaps matters. Look for ones that are ASTM certified. I use the Husqvarna ones and they're comfy enough to wear all day. Also, don't forget chainsaw gloves with Kevlar. One slip of the hand and you'll be glad you have them.
