Hey folks, just had a nasty kickback while cutting some old oak. My Stihl MS 261 saved my butt, but I was wearing chaps and a full face shield. That chain came right back at my thigh. Without the chaps I'd be in the ER. Anyone else have a close call? Always wear your gear!

Glad you're ok! I always preach the same. I had a bar tip catch on a limb once and the saw flew back, hit my helmet. That visor had a scratch but my face didnt. Cheap insurance if you ask me. What chaps do you use? I'm due for a new pair.

Whoa that's scary! I'm new to chainsaws and just got a cheap one from Harbor Freight. Im thinking of getting some PPE but don't know what to buy. Do I really need chaps? Or just gloves and glasses? Seems like overkill...

Dude, chaps are not overkill. I saw a guy almost cut his femoral artery because he thought jeans were enough. Get proper chaps, a good helmet with mesh visor, and hearing protection. Your local saw shop can help. And practice bore cutting in a log to understand kickback zones. Better safe than sorry!
