Hey everyone, I'm planning to build a 10x12 shed in my backyard this fall. I've got some trees that need clearing first - mostly pine and a couple of oak trunks about 12-14 inches thick. Never owned a chainsaw before. What should I look for? Budget is around $300-400. Thanks!

For shed work and occasional tree clearing, skip the cheap homeowner stuff. Look at the Stihl MS 250 or Husqvarna 450 Rancher. Both are pro-grade enough for your needs without breaking the bank. Get a 16" bar - perfect for those oak trunks. And FOR THE LOVE OF GOD buy chaps, gloves, and eye protection. I've seen too many DIYers skip safety gear.

Gary's right about safety! Also consider if you want gas or electric. For a shed project, a corded electric might work if you have outlet access - cheaper and less maintenance. But if you're clearing multiple trees, gas is way more convenient. Echo CS-590 is a beast in that price range - my buddy swears by his for firewood.

I built my shed last year with a Milwaukee M18 Fuel chainsaw (battery). If you already have their batteries, it's surprisingly capable! No fumes, quiet, and starts every time. Handled 10" pine no problem. For thicker oak, you might need to go slow, but for most shed-sized lumber it's perfect. Plus, no mixing gas!

Just finished my apprenticeship at a landscaping co - we use Stihl MS 271s for similar jobs. A bit above your budget new, but check used market! Lots of lightly used ones from folks who bought for one project. Whatever you get, practice on smaller branches first. My first time I nearly took out a fence post lol
