Storm prep: Chainsaw up or sit tight?

Just saw this about Avista prepping for windstorm. Makes me think about my own prep. I've got a big oak in the backyard that's been looking sketchy. You guys think I should break out the chainsaw and do some prophylactic trimming, or wait for the storm to pass? I've got a Stihl MS 261, plenty of power for that oak. But with winds that could hit 60 mph, I dunno if I want to be up on a ladder with a saw. What's your take?

Ha, typical Larry. You're always thinking about cutting something. But seriously, if that oak is as sketchy as you say, I'd get it trimmed NOW. I'm a Husqvarna guy myself, but your Stihl will handle it. Just be smart: wait for a calm day, use a proper harness if you're going up, and don't be a hero. I had a buddy who tried to ride out a storm, and his tree took out his shed. And his neighbor's fence. And the neighbor's car. You don't want that headache. Cut it down or trim it back, but do it safely.

I'm with Tim on getting it done before the storm. But I'd also make sure you've got your safety gear and a plan. I've got a DeWalt 60V chainsaw for quick trim jobs, but for a big oak, I'd get the gas saw. And remember, if the storm does knock out power, a chainsaw is your best friend for clearing driveways and such. So maybe prep your saw too: fresh fuel, sharp chain, and have a spare chain and bar oil on hand. Also, check your homeowner's insurance – some policies have exclusions for tree damage if it's pre-existing. Just a heads up.

Good points, guys. I think I'll do a few strategic cuts this weekend. Tim, you're right about the harness – I got one from Amazon, and I'll have my wife spot me. Dan, good call on the insurance and prep. I'll sharpen my chain and fill the gas can. Also, I might just clean up any dead branches that are near the house. Better safe than sorry, right? Thanks for the input, fellas.
