Just read that article about Randy Roberts and the Teton Pass volunteers. It's awesome to see people giving back like that, especially with all the trail maintenance needed. I've done some volunteer work clearing trails after storms, and it's no joke. But I'm curious - what kind of saws are these volunteers using? Are they all pro-grade or do some use homeowner models? A hybrid setup maybe? I'm thinking of upgrading my saw for heavier work, and this article got me thinking.

Great point, Sparky! I've seen a mix out there. Some volunteers rock the big Stihl or Husky pro saws, but I've also seen guys with smaller electric ones for the lighter stuff. Hybrid setups are the way to go - you need a good 50cc for the main cutting, but a small battery saw for limbing saves your back. I've got a little Milwaukee top-handle that's perfect for in the brush. But I'd love to know what Randy himself uses. He's a legend around here!

You guys are missing the point. It's not about the saw, it's about the dedication. 15 years as 'Summer Mayor'? That's serious commitment. I've been in my garage tinkering with saws for decades, and I know it takes skill to handle a saw safely and efficiently in the backcountry. Props to him and all the volunteers. Also, I agree with Wendy - a hybrid setup is practical, but when you're miles in the backcountry, you want a reliable saw. I'd take my old 026 Stihl any day over some fancy new tech that might fail.

Ha, Bob, you're right about the commitment. And I wasn't trying to knock the volunteers - just curious about the tools. My 261 is my go-to, but I've been eyeing a battery saw for quick jobs around the house. But when I'm up in the mountains, I want something that can take a beating. Maybe I should stick to what works. Still, it's cool to see the community coming together. And Randy sounds like a great guy - I hope someone gets him a beer next time they see him up there!
