Hey everyone, I'm planning to build a 12x16 deck off my back porch this spring. Never done anything this big before. I need to buy a drill/driver and maybe an impact driver too? My budget is around $200 for both. What should I get? Cordless for sure.

Dave, for a deck that size you'll want something with some torque. I'd recommend a 20V brushless combo kit from Makita or DeWalt. For $200 you can catch a deal on a drill and impact set. Don't cheap out on bits either. Get a good set of spade bits and a 1/4" hex set for deck screws.

You don't need to spend $200. Ryobi's brushless kit is like $150 and does the same job. I built my shed with a $99 Ryobi drill and it's still going. Use the extra money for beer and screws. But get the impact too, trust me, it's worth it for driving long deck screws.

True, Ryobi is fine for home use. But if you're doing a big deck, the extra torque from Makita or DeWalt will save you time. I've seen those little Ryobis bog down when driving 3" screws into treated lumber. But hey, your call. Just make sure whatever you get, have spare batteries charged.

Thanks guys. I think I'll go with the Makita set if I can find a deal. Budget is $200 but I can stretch a bit. Gotta do this right. Appreciate the advice!
