Hey guys, I'm planning to build a 12x16 deck next month. I need a cordless drill for drilling pilot holes and driving screws. I've been looking at the DeWalt DCD805 and Milwaukee M18 Fuel. Any recommendations? Budget is around $200 for just the tool.

I've restored a bunch of old decks. Go with the Milwaukee M18 Fuel – it's got the torque for lag screws and the brushless motor lasts. Plus the battery platform is solid if you plan to expand. The DeWalt is good too, but I've seen more milwaukee on jobsites.

@DeckBuilderDan I second the Milwaukee. I've used both on renos. The M18 Fuel has better ergonomics for long days. One tip: get a impact driver too – it'll save your wrists. Also, don't forget to predrill for treated lumber or you'll split the wood.

Important safety tip: if you're using a cordless drill, make sure you have the right clutch setting for screws. Too high and you'll strip heads, too low and they won't seat. Also wear safety glasses – those chips fly. I like the Milwaukee as well. Just don't cheap out on bits.

I've collected a few drills over the years. If you want to stay under $200, the Makita XPH14Z is a beast. It's compact but powerful. Or check Craigslist for a used Milwaukee – I got a Fuel for $100. But if new, my vote is Milwaukee M18 Fuel. You won't regret it.
