Hey folks, looking to upgrade my old corded drill and trying to decide between DeWalt and Makita for a cordless combo kit. I've got some deck repairs and furniture building coming up. I see both brands at my local hardware store, but the price difference is noticeable. Anyone have long-term experience with either? I want something that'll last.

I've been using a Makita 18V sub-compact drill for about 2 years now and it's been solid for the price. Got it on sale during Black Friday with 2 batteries for under $150. The DeWalt stuff always seems pricier to me. If you're just doing occasional home stuff, do you really need the extra power? My Makita handles everything from drilling pilot holes to driving 3" screws no problem. Battery life is decent too.

As someone who uses drills daily on renovation sites, I have to disagree with Bob here. DeWalt's brushless XR line is worth the extra money if you're doing serious work. The torque control is better, they handle abuse better, and the battery ecosystem is more versatile if you ever expand your tools. That said, Makita makes excellent tools too - their ergonomics are slightly better IMO. What specific models are you looking at, Dave?

Thanks both! Sarah, I was looking at the DeWalt DCD791 vs Makita XFD131. Both are brushless 18V models. Bob makes a good point about price though - the Makita is about $50 cheaper with similar specs on paper. But I'm with you on durability - my old corded DeWalt lasted 15 years before the switch gave out. Do either of you have experience with warranty/service? Heard Makita's customer service can be hit or miss.

Never had to use warranty on my Makita, so can't speak to that. But $50 is $50! That's like... a nice dinner out or more drill bits lol. If you're retired and not using it daily like Sarah, maybe save the cash? Unless you're planning to build another house or something 😄
