So I'm in the market for a new cordless drill for some heavy duty renovations. I've been a DeWalt guy for years, but I keep hearing Makita is the way to go now. Any thoughts? I'm mainly drilling through hardwoods and occasionally concrete with a masonry bit.

Dude, Makita all the way. I've been using their 18V LXT line for my contracting work, and the build quality is spot on. The XPH12 model has killer torque and a great chuck. Plus, they're lighter which makes a difference when you're on a ladder all day. Just my two cents.

I've had both and honestly, they're both beasts. But for me, it comes down to the battery platform. If you already have DeWalts, stick with it, you've got batteries everywhere. But if starting fresh, Makita's offering is top notch. Also, check the chuck - some DeWalts have had a wobble issue in the past.

Retired carpenter here - used both professionally. DeWalt has that US tech support and the new XR line is great, but Makita's speed control is smoother for precision work. For concrete, both are fine with the right bit. Honestly, go to a store and feel the handle. Ergonomics matter when you're drilling all day. P.S. - Don't forget to check the dust extraction if you're doing lots of overhead drilling.
