Hey everyone, I've got a Makita 18V drill and the battery just won't charge. I plug it in, the charger light stays red for a bit then goes green, but when i put it in the drill, it's dead. Anyone else had this? Could it be the battery or the charger?

DiYDan85, sounds like a classic case of a dead cell or two in the pack. My old Makita did the same. If the charger says it's charged but the battery has no juice, it's usually a bad cell. You can try to revive it by discharging fully and recharging, but if that don't work, might be time for a new battery. I replaced mine after 5 years and it was like a new drill.

I'd check the charger too, mate. I've seen chargers that show a green light but don't actually put out the right voltage. Get a multimeter and test the charger output when it's plugged in. If it's putting out 18V but the battery still doesn't charge, then it's likely the battery. Also, make sure the contacts are clean. Sometimes they get dirty and cause a bad connection.

If you're looking to save a few bucks, you could try a generic replacement battery from Amazon. I got one for my Ryobi and it works fine. But check the reviews first. Also, if your drill is old, it might be worth just buying a new drill with a battery and charger. Sometimes the combo deals are better than buying a battery alone.

Thanks guys. I'll try the multimeter test first, and see if the contacts need cleaning. If it's the battery, I'll look into a replacement. Appreciate the help!
