So I'm cruising garage sales this morning and this old guy has a Dewalt DCD791 with two batteries and a charger, all in the original case. He said his son left it when he moved and he just wants it gone. $40?! I snagged it. It looks barely used. Did I just make the deal of the century or is this thing gonna explode on me? Anyone got experience with this model?

Ha! You lucky dog. The DCD791 is a solid brushless drill. I've been using one on jobsites for years. At $40 with batteries and charger, that's a steal. Those batteries alone are worth more than that. Just check the batteries for corrosion and give it a good charge cycle. It'll serve you well. Congrats.

Yep, that's a great deal. I've got the 791 as my backup. It's got plenty of torque for most drilling and driving. The only thing I'd do is give it a quick once-over: check the chuck for any wobble, make sure the brake works, and verify the batteries hold a charge. If all good, you got yourself a $150+ drill for pocket change. Nice find.

I'd echo what the others said. I restore old drills as a hobby, and the 791 is one of the better ones. Just open up the chuck and make sure the jaws aren't stripped, and run it at full speed to see if it sounds rough. If it's smooth, you're golden. Also, those batteries might be older, so they might need conditioning. But even if they're toast, new ones are like $60 each, still less than buying new. You done good.
