Found a DeWalt DCD791 for $80 – too good to be true?

So I was at a garage sale this morning and saw a DeWalt DCD791 brushless drill with two 20V batteries and a charger for $80. It looked barely used, no scratches, chuck was tight. I grabbed it but now I'm wondering if I got a lemon. Anyone have experience with this model? Should I test it more thoroughly before declaring victory?

Man, $80 for that is a steal, even if it's used. I've had mine for 3 years, drilled through concrete anchors with it, and it still runs like new. But yeah, definitely check the chuck for runout and make sure the gears aren't slipping. Pop a bit in, turn it on, and see if it wobbles. Also, test both batteries – DeWalt's batteries can die, and replacement ones cost as much as you paid. If everything checks out, you got a great deal.

I've restored dozens of DeWalts. That model is a workhorse. Check the serial number to see how old it is – if it's within the last 5 years, it's likely fine. Also, look at the brushes (if it's brushless, that's even better). But honestly, for $80, even if the motor burned out tomorrow, you could sell the batteries and charger for more than you paid. Keep it, test it, but don't overthink. If it drills holes, you're golden. And if it breaks, let me know – I might buy it off you for parts! 😉

Thanks guys! I did a quick test – drilled a hole in a 2x4, ran it in reverse, and even used the hammer function (well, it doesn't have one, but you know). No wobble, gears are smooth, and both batteries charge fully and hold. I think I'm set. Now I just need to find a project to use it on!
