So I was drilling into some old pallet wood yesterday and a chunk flew up and hit my cheek. Didn't draw blood but scared the crap outta me. I'm on a budget and usually just wear my regular glasses. What's the minimum PPE I should get? Don't wanna spend a fortune but also don't wanna lose an eye lol.

Chris, seriously, don't cheap out on your eyes. I've been on job sites for 15 years and seen guys get metal shavings pulled out of their cornea. Get proper safety glasses that wrap around and have side shields. You can get a decent pair for like $10-15. Also, if you're drilling overhead, wear a face shield too. And for the love of god, don't wear loose gloves with a drill – they can catch and break your wrist.

I learned this the hard way too! I was drilling into concrete without glasses and got a tiny piece in my eye. Had to go to urgent care. Now I always wear safety glasses, even for quick jobs. Also, earplugs are a good idea if you're using a hammer drill. Those things are LOUD.

Thanks Felix and Sarah. I'll grab a pair of wrap-arounds and some earplugs. Any specific brands you recommend? I saw some at Harbor Freight for like $5 but not sure if they're any good.

Harbor Freight ones are okay in a pinch but the lenses scratch easily. I like 3M or DeWalt. Also, make sure they're ANSI Z87.1 rated. That's the standard. And don't forget a dust mask if you're drilling into MDF or treated wood. That dust is nasty.
