Hey guys, just starting a basement renovation and drilling a lot of holes into concrete for shelving. The dust cloud is insane. I've got safety glasses and ear plugs, but should I be wearing a dust mask too? I've been holding my breath but that's not working lol.

Absolutely, Rick. That silica dust is no joke. Get a good N95 mask at least. I've seen guys get silicosis from years of that stuff. Also, if you can, hook up a shop vac to the hammer drill - cuts down dust by 90%.

Yup what Chris said. And don't cheap out on the mask. Those paper ones from the hardware store are okay for a few holes but for a whole basement get a half-face respirator with P100 filters. Your lungs will thank you later.

I learned the hard way. Did a whole day of drilling without a mask and coughed up grey stuff for a week. Never again. Now I use the RZ mask - it's reusable and fits under my face shield. Also, mist the area with a spray bottle to keep dust down.

Thanks guys, I'm ordering a respirator tonight. The spray bottle tip is genius Felix. I'll also try the vac attachment. This is why I love this forum - real advice from people who've been there.
