Best driver for a new deck? Cordless vs. corded?

Hey guys, I’m planning to build a 12x16 deck this spring. I’ve got a cheap corded drill from harbor freight but it’s not cutting it. Should I get a cordless impact driver or stick with corded? I’m on a tight budget but want something that can handle lag screws and decking. What’s your go-to?

Hands down go cordless. I’ve been using the Makita XDT16 for years and it’s a beast. Plenty of torque for lags and it drives deck screws all day. Get a 5Ah battery and you’re good for a full day. Don’t skimp on bits though, get some good ones or you’ll strip heads.

I second the cordless recommendation. I’ve built dozens of decks. For the money, the DeWalt DCF887 is hard to beat. Might be less than the Makita. But if you’re on a tight budget, the Ryobi P238 is decent and you can get a kit with two batteries for cheap. It'll handle most deck work, but maybe skip it for 3” lags.

If budget is the main thing, don't overlook the Skil PWRCORE 20. It’s like $80 with battery and has surprising torque. I used it for my shed foundation and no complaints. But honestly, if you’re just doing one deck, maybe rent an impact? Or check pawn shops. I got a Dewalt 887 for $40 with battery.

Thanks all! I think I’ll check out the Dewalt 887 or maybe look for a used one. Appreciate the tips on bits too, I forgot about that. I’ll post pics when it’s done!
