Hey folks, I'm planning to build a 12x16 deck this summer. I'll be using 5/4 x 6 decking and framing with 2x8s. I already have a cordless drill, but I'm wondering if I need an impact driver too. I've seen some threads saying they're the bee's knees for deck screws, but I don't want to spend extra if my drill can handle it. What do you all think? Also, any recommendations for a good combo kit if I go that route?

Get the impact driver, man. It'll save your wrists if you're driving a gazillion #8 screws. I built a shed last year with a cordless drill and it was a chore. My 12v impact driver made quick work of the sheathing. If you're on a budget, even a brushed one is fine. Pair it with a good set of hex bits with the little ring to hold the screw.

What Pete said. Impact drivers have way more torque and are easier on your arm because the concussive action kinda hammers the screw in. For decking, you'll appreciate the control too. I've got the DeWalt 20V max combo, but if I were starting fresh, I'd look at the Milwaukee M18 Fuel or the Makita XDT16. Also, don't forget to get a decking bit with the depth setter to countersink the screws properly - that's a big help.

I'll throw in a different angle - cordless vs corded. If you're building a whole deck, you'll be going through a lot of batteries. I use a corded impact driver for heavy stuff cause I don't wanna stop to charge. But if you're already invested in a battery system, might be worth it. Also, check your drill - if it's a 12v, it'll struggle. Even a 18v drill is ok but the impact driver is just quicker. Get a set with two batteries so you're not waiting.

Great points, thanks! I have a 20V drill, so I guess that's decent, but the impact driver sounds like a must. I think I'll spring for a combo kit - maybe the Ryobi or Ridgid since they're more budget-friendly. I'll grab a decking bit too. Appreciate the help, guys!
