Hey everyone! I'm about to build a 12x16 deck with 2x6 joists and need to sink a lot of 3/8" lag screws into the ledger and posts. I have a basic 18V drill/driver, but should I get an impact driver for this? I've seen mixed opinions. Any advice? Budget is around $150-$200.

Oh definitely get an impact driver! I tried using my drill for lag screws on my shed and it was a nightmare. The impact driver drives them in like butter and you don't have to worry about wrist strain. Plus, you can use the drill for pilot holes if they're needed. Trust me, it's a game changer. I got one on sale for like $99 and it's worth every penny.

WrenchWendy is spot on. The impact driver is the way to go for structural screws. I'm a weekend warrior but I've done a few decks. The impact driver also helps with the torque and prevents stripping. However, if you're on a tight budget, a good drill/driver with a hammer function can work if you pre-drill and use the right technique. But honestly, if you plan on doing more projects, investing in an impact driver is a no-brainer. Also, get some good hex bits that lock in - that's a game changer too.

As a pro, I'll say this: you'll want an impact driver for framing and deck work, period. The vibration and torque make driving 3/8" lags quick and effortless. I've seen too many homeowners struggle with a drill and end up with stripped heads or snapped screws. If you can, get a brushless model for better battery life and power. In your budget, look at DeWalt DCF887 or Milwaukee M18 Fuel, they often go on sale. Also, for the ledger, make sure you use the correct lag length and pre-drill to avoid splitting. If you're into DIY, an impact driver will be your best friend for years to come.

thanks everyone! I just bought a DeWalt DCF887 with 2 batteries and a charger for $169 - it was on sale! Can't wait to try it. Appreciate the help, I'll probably hit you all up if I run into issues during the build. 😄
