Deck Build Tool Recommendations – Drivers?

Hey everyone! I'm planning to build a 20x12 deck next spring. I've got a circular saw and a drill, but I'm thinking about getting a dedicated impact driver for all the screws. Should I go with a brushless 18V or is a cheaper brushed one fine for occasional use? Also, any brand recommendations that won't break the bank? Thanks!

Hey Dan! For a deck, you're going to be sinking a ton of screws, so an impact driver is a game changer. I'd definitely go brushless – the extra power and battery life are worth it, especially if you're doing this over a few weekends. I've had a DeWalt 20V brushless for years and it's a beast. You might catch a sale on a kit with a drill and driver – that's the way to go if you're starting fresh. Also, get some good quality screws – they make a difference!

Listen to Sarah, brushless is the way to go. But if you're on a budget, you can find decent brushed ones that'll do the job for a single project. I got a Ryobi brushed impact driver for cheap and it's still running after two decks and a shed. Just know that the batteries drain faster. For brand, I'm a Milwaukee guy myself – the M18 Fuel is pricey but rugged. If you're not a pro, maybe stick with Ryobi or Ridgid – they're good value and have solid warranties.

I'm with Gary on the Ryobi for budget, but if you're doing a deck, also consider the weight. You'll be holding that thing overhead for hours, so a lighter driver might save your arm. I've got a Makita sub-compact that's super light and powerful – perfect for that. And don't forget to get a spare battery – nothing worse than waiting for a charge in the middle of a project. What about you, Dan – are you going with a kit or just the driver?

Thanks all, that's really helpful! I think I'll go with a brushless kit – probably Ryobi since they seem the most budget-friendly for a beginner. I'll grab an extra battery too. And good call on the weight, Rick – I'll check out the sub-compact variants. I'm not set on a brand yet, but I'll keep those in mind. Now, off to watch some YouTube videos on decking techniques! Appreciate the advice!
