Hey guys! I'm planning to build a 12x16 deck this spring. I already have a cordless drill (old Ryobi) but wondering if I should get a dedicated impact driver for framing and deck screws? Budget around $200-300. What would you recommend? Also, do I need a hammer drill for the concrete piers or can I rent one?

Will, def get an impact driver! I built my shed with just a drill and stripped so many screws. Picked up a DeWalt 20V impact on sale and it was night and day. For the concrete, rent a rotary hammer from Home Depot – your drill won't cut it. Stick with the same battery platform if you can.

I second the impact driver. Even a budget brand like Ryobi or Hart will save you hassles. But for the concrete, I used a hammer drill with carbide bits and it worked fine for 6 piers – just go slow and let the tool do the work. If you're doing more than a dozen, rent a SDS.

Milwaukee all the way! Get the M18 Fuel impact and hammer drill combo – usually around $300 on special. The impact has 2500 in/lbs of torque, will drive anything. For concrete, the Fuel hammer drill with a proper bit will handle 10 piers no problem. Team Red for life!
